(Press Release; WBSC AMERICAS BASEBALL).- The U23 World Cup continued with Nicaragua beating
Venezuela 3-2 to remain undefeated, while Puerto Rico lost to Australia 5-4 and
Colombia beat Great Britain 6-4.
Colombia
achieved its first victory of the tournament by beating Great Britain 6-4 in a
duel in which with a five-run rally in the fourth inning they were able to
sentence their rival.
Offensively,
Andrés Villafañe stood out by going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, the victory went to Kevin
Gómez who allowed four hits in three innings, with two runs. The save went to
Carlos Meza who struck out one in one inning.
In
a duel of teams from America, Nicaragua beat Venezuela by the minimum
difference 3-2 and thus maintains its undefeated record in the Opening Round of
the tournament.
For
Nicaragua, Goodwin Bennett stood out, going 2-for-2 with one run scored and two
RBIs. Meanwhile, on the mound, Angel Canales pitched five innings of four hits,
with one earned run, three walks and four strikeouts to secure the victory. For
Venezuela, Cesar Idrogo went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
For
its part, Australia walked off Puerto Rico in extra innings 5-4, with runs to
tie the game in the seventh and eighth, in addition to the winning run in the
ninth.
For
Puerto Rico, John Torres went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while
Edgardo Villegas went 1-for-2 with two walks and one run scored.
Colombia
will face host China on the road in its next game, Venezuela will be home club
against South Africa, Nicaragua will be visitor against Chinese Taipei and
Puerto Rico will be home club against Great Britain.
