(Press Release; WBSC AMERICAS BASEBALL) - The U23 World Cup continued with good results for the
teams of the Americas, Nicaragua remains undefeated after beating Chinese
Taipei 4-3, Puerto Rico defeated Great Britain 8-3 and Venezuela defeated South
Africa 10-0 in six innings by knockout. Only Colombia lost 4-3 to the
tournament host, China.
Nicaragua
remains undefeated with a 4-3 win over Chinese Taipei to improve to 3-0 in the
tournament. Juan Gaytan won the game by tolerating three hits and three runs
(two earned) in four innings with five strikeouts. Bryan Torres earned the save
by allowing just one hit in one inning.
Meanwhile,
Puerto Rico improved to 2-1 with its 8-3 victory over Great Britain, a game in
which Edrick Feliz batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Luis Gonzalez also batted 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Venezuela
defeated South Africa by knockout in six innings, 10-0, to also improve to 2-1.
The winner was Cristian Fermín who in two innings walked one and struck out
two. Offensively, Cesar Idrogo went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two runs
batted in.
Finally,
China won their second game of the tournament by scoring their four runs in the
first inning and making them count, their 4-3 victory leaves the South
Americans with a 1-2 record.
Colombia
was limited to three hits, Guillermo Quintana contributed going 2-for-3 with a
run scored and the other player to collect a hit was Nolan Beltran as he went
1-for-3.
Venezuela
will play away against Korea in its next game, while Puerto Rico will be home
club against host China. Nicaragua will be away against the Netherlands and
Colombia will be away against Japan.
