(Press Release; WBSC AMERICAS BASEBALL).- The U23 World Cup closed the Opening Round with three
teams from America advancing to the Super Round, Nicaragua advanced undefeated
by beating Korea 7 to 1, Puerto Rico beat Colombia 3 to 2 to also advance and
Venezuela, despite falling 3 to 0 against Chinese Taipei, had also already
advanced to the Super round.
Nicaragua
was superior to everyone by finishing with an undefeated 5-0 record, beating
Korea 7 to 1 in its last game. Stanling Orozco won the game by pitching 4.1
innings with five hits, one unearned run, a walk and a strikeout.
Offensively,
Enmanuel Trujillo stood out, going 1 for 3 with three RBIs, while Goodwin
Bennett went 1 for 3 with another RBI.
Puerto
Rico also secured its direct berth by beating Colombia 3-1, with Shadai Colón
winning the game by pitching 2.1 innings of one hit and two strikeouts. While
on offense, Osvaldo Torres stood out, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs.
For
its part, Venezuela lost 3 to 0 against Chinese Taipei, but they had already
advanced to the Super Round. Pedro Martínez was on base four times, going
1-for-1 with three walks.
The
Super Round begins with a duel of the Americas; Puerto Rico visits Nicaragua,
while Venezuela is a visitor against world number one Japan. For its part,
Colombia starts as home club in the Placement Round against Chinese Taipei.
The
American teams seek to return to the podium of the U23 World Cup where they
could not be in the previous edition.
