(Press Release; WBSC AMERICAS
BASEBALL) - The U12 World Cup Qualifier being played in
Panama, had a first day of competition in which the great protagonist was the
rain, which prevented the completion of the day's competition.
Only the games scheduled in
the early hours would be completed, with victories for Mexico and Dominican
Republic, which in a very different way, were successful in their first day of
competition.
Nicaragua and Mexico had one
of the most exciting games of the tournament, with the Nicaraguans winning 1-0
and holding their opponent hitless with two outs in the last inning.
But young Carlos Cruz became
the hero, hitting a three-run homer to not only end the no-hit game, but to complete
a walk off win for Mexico a 3-1.
Meanwhile, the Dominican
Republic had no mercy against Brazil in their first game, beating them 10-0 in
five innings to open the tournament with a victory.
Milfree Figueroa became the
early hero of the day by batting 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two runs
batted in and a walk for the Dominican Republic.
Immediately afterwards, the
rain came down and stayed throughout the afternoon, forcing the suspension of
the other four games scheduled for the opening day.
