The U12 World Cup ended with the United States winning 14 to 7 against the
Dominican Republic to grab the gold medal and the trophy of the event.
A game that was marked by rain
and that was moved from Rod Carew Stadium to Andy Alonso Stadium halfway
through the game in order to complete it, ended with a victory for the United
States that took advantage of a six-run fifth inning.
Joshua Pierre shined by
hitting 3-for-4 with four runs scored and one run batted in, while Carlo Rivero
went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.
In the morning they had
competed for the bronze medal, Cuba beat Panama 5-1 to stand on the podium, guided
by the pitching of Daibel Barrero who in six innings received four hits, with
one run, two walks and two strikeouts.
Alan López went 2-for-4 with
two runs scored and two runs batted in to be, together with Barrero, the best
of the game.
The three teams that reached
the podium and Panama will attend the World Championship of the category, in a
tournament that ended with Mexico in fifth place, followed by Puerto Rico,
Venezuela, Nicaragua, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina respectively.
Carlo Rivero of the United
States was the MVP of the tournament and was accompanied on the all-star team
by his compatriots Jack Mattingly at first and Joshua Park in the outfield.
From Cuba, Daibel Barrero was the third baseman and Humberto Alfonso the
shortstop; from Venezuela, Carlos Gutiérrez catchert and Sebastián Gil the DH;
Brandon Baez from the Dominican Republic was the second baseman; and José Reyes
from Mexico and Adolfo Alcoser from Nicaragua were the other two outfielders.
