(Press Release; WBSC AMERICAS BASEBALL).- The baseball tournament of the Pan American Games that takes place at the Bicentenario stadium in Cerrillos, began with a resounding victory for Mexico against the host Chile.

Mexico scored two runs in the first inning, eight in the third and six in the fourth to beat Chile by knockout in five innings by a score of 16 to 0 and start the tournament.

Mexican pitcher Wilmer Rios led the way by throwing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts and one walk in play in which four other pitchers combined with the starter to leave Chile hitless.

Randy Romero stood out by going 1 for 2 with two runs scored, one RBI and two walks, while Fernando Villegas went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Roberto Ramos also went 1-for-2 with three runs scored, one RBI and three walks.

Mexico and Chile will play again on Saturday, the North Americans will do so against the Dominican Republic as a home club, while the hosts of the tournament will be visitors against Panama.

However, the tournament continues tomorrow when Panama visits Dominican Republic first thing in the morning, followed by Brazil's debut at home against Venezuela. Cuba will be the home club against Colombia on Friday to complete the first game for each team.

There are eight nations fighting in this Pan American tournament to be the best on the continent and be on the podium once the intense competition of the event ends.
